Please find below a little disclaimer on my work style and personality. It tries to summarise the things that I've in the past noticed can cause some communication issues, especially online.

What makes me tick

On culture

I was born and raised in the Netherlands, the culture here is known to be direct to the point of bluntness and/or rudeness. Imagine a blend of Russian/Israeli straightforwardness, Scandinavian open mindedness and southern European lack of filter.

Please know that I'm excited to work with you and if something I say/write sounds blunt/rude/unhappy there is a 90% chance that was not my intention. Please feel free to communicate openly with me, say what you think and assume I appreciate honesty over artificial niceness.

On communication

As a programmer/biologist I'm used to thinking in very structured ways, so I'll probably communicate more through bullet points than paragraphs. I don't expect you to fully conform to that but would appreciate it if you could (in communicating) structure your thoughts as clearly and concisely as possible.

On planning

I work like a maker, not a manager. I dedicate big blocks of time to do deep work. In practice this means I am less available than most for meetings and tend to respond to emails later than most. I'm also exceptionally against spontaneous calls and prefer to know about them a day in advance.

On personality

In the MBTI spectrum I'm an ENTJ-A (with the caveat that Iā€™m an introvert by nature). In summary I like efficiency, energy and strategy but can sometimes be stubborn and ruthless. I try to use my strengths and minimise the impact of my weaknesses, but please feel free to point it out to me if I'm being impatient or unreasonable as I will not hold it against you (actually I appreciate it since you are helping me recalibrate).

On business operations

I have self-imposed limits on the assignments I work on and the way I work on them. If your request doesn't fall in them, it's not that I think you are wrong, but that I'm not the right person to do the job.

My self-imposed principles

On tooling

I consider notifications a distraction and consequently disabled all of them, unless I am expecting a message from you it is hard to get a hold of me urgently. If you need on-demand access to my attention let me know so we can establish a protocol that works for us.
